Animals that can be seen in the park.

Leopards

Leopards in Yala National Park are easily recognised by their large stature and eye-catching golden coats speckled with black. These big cats are mainly active at night and in the early morning hours and hunt alone. Being at the top of the food chain, as apex predators, they are crucial to maintaining the equilibrium of the park’s ecosystem.

The park’s dense forests are home to leopards the majority of the time, but they are also present in meadows and next to sources of water. When hunting prey like deer, wild boar, and other mammals, they are renowned for their stealth and agility. Wildlife tours in Yala National Park offer visitors the chance to witness these magnificent creatures. Even though seeing leopards is uncommon, seeing them is one of the park’s top attractions and a highlight of every trip.

Elephants

One of the most recognisable and well-liked creatures in Sri Lanka’s Yala National Park is the elephant. Asian elephants are indigenous to the area and have a robust population in the park. Distinguished by their enormous stature, characteristic creased skin, and gregarious demeanour, these elephants serve as the park’s flagship species for conservation initiatives.

Wild boar: Large and omnivorous, these pigs can be found all across the park in grasslands and woodlands. During the day, they are busy and can be observed searching for food or cooling down in mud.

Sloth bear: Native to South Asia, this bear with shaggy hair inhabits a range of environments, such as grasslands and woods. They are mostly nocturnal and consume a wide range of foods, such as fruits, insects, and small mammals.

Sambar deer:  Native to the park, these are the biggest species of deer in Asia. They are active during the day, eating on grasses and browsing on plants, and are usually observed in huge groups.

Mongoose: Yala National Park is home to a variety of mongoose species, including the grey and little Indian mongooses. Throughout the day, these tiny carnivores are busy and consume a wide range of food, such as insects, small animals, and reptiles.

Birds: Yala National Park is a well-liked spot for bird watching, as it is home to over 200 different species of birds. Among the noteworthy species are the Sri Lankan peafowl, the Sri Lankan spurfowl, and the jungle fowl.
